DEFINITION

Functional Resume

A resume format organized by skills and abilities rather than by chronological work history.

A functional resume (also called a skills-based resume) organizes content around skill categories rather than listing jobs in chronological order. Instead of a detailed work history timeline, it groups accomplishments under headings like 'Project Management,' 'Data Analysis,' or 'Client Relations.' While this format can be useful for career changers or candidates with employment gaps, most ATS systems and recruiters prefer chronological formats. Many ATS platforms struggle to parse functional resumes accurately because they cannot easily associate achievements with specific roles and timeframes, which can result in lower match scores.
