The Generator

Build your resignation letter

Anything you leave blank shows up highlighted in the letter, so you can see what is still missing instead of sending something half finished.

Situation

Your letter

Before you send it: check your contract for the notice period you actually owe, and send it to your manager before anyone else hears it. This is a template, not legal advice.

The letter is the easy part

Resigning well takes an afternoon. Landing the next role takes a resume that gets past the filter first. Upload yours and see the exact text an applicant tracking system pulls out of it.

Rules

Four rules for a resignation letter

1

Say it in the first line

The role, the fact you are resigning, and the last day. A reader who has to hunt for the date will ask you for it anyway, and the letter goes in a file.

2

Do not explain your grievances

This document outlives the relationship and gets read by people you have not met. Save the criticism for the exit interview, or for nowhere.

3

Name one real thing

A single specific detail is the difference between a letter and a form. It costs one sentence and it is the part people remember.

4

Offer a concrete handover

"Happy to help with the transition" means nothing. Naming what you will document and who you will brief is what makes the offer real.

By Situation

The generator covers the letter. These cover the decision around it, with filled examples for each case.

Two weeks notice letter

The default case, plus what to do when your contract asks for more than two weeks and you cannot give it.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is this resignation letter generator free?

Yes. It runs entirely in your browser with no account and no email. Nothing you type is sent to us or stored anywhere, which is also why we cannot recover it if you close the tab.

How much notice do I have to give?

Check your contract before you decide. Two weeks is a convention in much of the United States, not a law, and some contracts require a month or more. Where a notice period is contractual, leaving early can affect your final pay or your eligibility for rehire.

Should I say why I am leaving?

One neutral clause is plenty, and even that is optional. A resignation letter is a record, not a conversation. Detailed reasons, especially critical ones, get read later by people who were not part of the situation.

Letter or email?

Email is normal now and the toggle above drops the address block for it. Whichever you choose, tell your manager in person or on a call first. Finding out by email is the part people remember.

Can I resign by text message?

You can, and it will be legally effective in most at-will roles, but it costs you the reference. A one-line email takes the same thirty seconds and leaves a record you would be happy to have read back.

Should I mention where I am going?

Only if you want to. There is no obligation to name your next employer, and in competitive industries there are good reasons not to until you have started.
