Engineering is not one profession. It is at least twenty, and each one demands a fundamentally different resume. A mechanical engineer highlighting SolidWorks experience and ASME standards competes against completely different criteria than a chemical engineer listing process simulation tools and EPA compliance work. The BLS projects 186,050 engineering job openings per year through 2034, with median pay of $97,310 across all disciplines (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2024). Competition for these roles is intensifying: there are roughly three open engineering positions for every qualified candidate (Addison Group, 2026 Engineering Workforce Report). This guide provides five complete, discipline-specific resume examples with the exact skills lists, bullet point formats, and ATS keywords that engineering recruiters search for in 2026.

Weak Skills Section
Skills: CAD, simulation, programming, project management, problem solving, teamwork, Microsoft Office, communication, time management
Generic, unspecific, mixes soft skills with technical. An ATS cannot match "CAD" to a specific tool requirement.
Strong Skills Section
CAD/CAE: SolidWorks (expert), CATIA V5, ANSYS Mechanical
Analysis: FEA, CFD, GD&T (ASME Y14.5-2018)
Programming: MATLAB, Python, C++
Manufacturing: CNC, injection molding, 3D printing (SLS)
Categorized, specific, includes version numbers and proficiency levels. Every term is an ATS keyword match.
Group your skills into 3 to 5 subcategories relevant to your discipline. Include proficiency levels (expert, proficient, familiar) for your strongest tools. Always use the full tool name the first time, then the abbreviation: "Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)" ensures both the spelled-out term and abbreviation are indexed by ATS parsers.
How to Present Engineering Projects, Patents, and Publications
Engineering is one of the few professions where your project portfolio, patent filings, and technical publications can carry as much weight as your job titles. For engineers with fewer than 5 years of experience, projects (including senior design/capstone) are essential resume content. For senior engineers, patents and publications differentiate you from candidates at the same experience level.
Project Section Format
Use the same action-verb plus quantified-result format as your experience bullets. Include the project scope, your specific contribution, tools used, and outcome.
Project Entry Examples
Engineering Projects
Autonomous Warehouse Robot (Senior Capstone) | Georgia Tech, Fall 2023
- Designed a 4-DOF robotic arm with vacuum gripper in SolidWorks, integrating ROS2 for path planning and achieving 98% pick accuracy in a simulated warehouse environment

Engineering Certification and PE License Formatting
The Professional Engineer (PE) license is the single most valuable credential in traditional engineering disciplines. According to the National Society of Professional Engineers, PE-licensed engineers earn 10% to 25% more than their non-licensed peers in equivalent roles. For civil and structural engineers, PE licensure is effectively mandatory for career advancement beyond entry-level positions.
PE License Display
Where to include it:
- After your name in the header: Jane Smith, PE
- In the Certifications section with state and license number
- In your professional summary (for ATS keyword matching)
Format: Professional Engineer (PE), State of [State], License #XXX-XXXXX
EIT/FE Display
If you passed the FE exam but are not yet PE licensed:
- After your name: John Doe, EIT
- In Certifications: Engineer in Training (EIT), State of [State]
- Add: "Pursuing PE licensure in [Year]" to signal intent
Format: Engineer in Training (EIT), State of [State]
High-Value Engineering Certifications by Discipline
| Discipline | Top Certifications | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Mechanical | CSWP (SolidWorks), Six Sigma Green/Black Belt, PMP | CSWP validates CAD proficiency. Six Sigma signals process improvement capability. |
| Civil | PMP, CFM (Certified Floodplain Manager), LEED AP, SE (Structural) | PMP is expected at the project engineer level. SE license opens structural-specific roles. |
| Electrical | CFSE (Functional Safety), RCDD, CEM (Certified Energy Manager) | CFSE is critical for process industry electrical roles. CEM aligns with data center and sustainability work. |
| Chemical | Six Sigma Black Belt, CFSE, CPSA (Certified Process Safety Auditor) | Safety certifications are often required, not optional, in chemical plant roles. |
| Industrial | CSCP (APICS), Lean Six Sigma, CPIM, PMP | Supply chain and Lean credentials directly map to the job function. |
Always include both the abbreviation and full name for every certification. ATS systems may search for "PMP" or "Project Management Professional" depending on how the job description was written. Including both ensures you match either query.
ATS Keywords by Engineering Subdiscipline
ATS keyword matching is the first filter your resume passes through. According to a 2024 Jobscan analysis, 98% of Fortune 500 companies use an ATS, and resumes that match fewer than 60% of the job description keywords are automatically filtered out. Engineering resumes face a unique challenge: the keywords are highly discipline-specific. A "design engineer" keyword list for mechanical roles looks completely different from electrical.

Engineering Resume Template: Universal Structure
Regardless of discipline, every engineering resume should follow this structure. The order of sections changes slightly based on experience level: new graduates should place education before experience, while engineers with 3+ years should lead with experience.
Engineering Resume Template (3+ Years Experience)
- Name and Contact Information with PE/EIT designation after your name. Include city/state, phone, email, and LinkedIn URL. No photo, no physical address.
- Professional Summary (3 to 4 sentences). Include years of experience, primary discipline, biggest quantified achievement, key tools, and relevant license/certification.
- Professional Experience in reverse chronological order. Each role: company name, location, title, dates. 3 to 5 bullets per role, each starting with an action verb and ending with a quantified result.
- Education with degree, institution, graduation year. Include GPA if above 3.5 and you graduated within the last 5 years. Add relevant coursework only for new graduates.
- Certifications and Licenses with full name, abbreviation, issuing body, and state (for PE/EIT).
- Technical Skills grouped into 3 to 5 subcategories. Be specific: tool names, versions, and proficiency levels.
- Projects / Patents / Publications (if applicable). Use the same action-verb format as experience bullets.
5 Engineering Resume Mistakes That Cost Interviews
1. Listing duties instead of achievements
Wrong: "Responsible for FEA analysis of components"
Right: "Performed FEA analysis on 15 compressor housing variants in ANSYS, identifying the design that reduced weight by 18% while meeting ASME fatigue life requirements"
2. Using a creative or multi-column template
Two-column layouts, graphics, and icons break ATS parsers. A 2024 study by TopResume found that resumes with multi-column layouts had a 25% lower parse accuracy rate. Engineering resumes should use a single-column format with clear section headers.
3. Omitting the PE/EIT designation
If you hold a PE license or EIT certification, it must appear after your name, in your summary, and in your certifications section. PE-licensed engineers earn 10% to 25% more (NSPE), and many jobs auto-filter for "PE" in the resume text.
4. Generic skills without tools or versions
Listing "CAD" instead of "SolidWorks 2024" or "simulation" instead of "ANSYS Mechanical 2024 R1" means you will not match job descriptions that specify exact tools. Always name the software, version, and your proficiency level.
5. Three or more pages
A 2023 ResumeGo study found that two-page resumes received 2.9 times more callbacks than one-page resumes for mid-career roles. But three-page resumes performed worse than two-page resumes. For engineers with under 10 years of experience, two pages is the maximum.
