Contact Header

Include LinkedIn for all engineering disciplines. Add a GitHub or portfolio URL for software, computer, and systems engineers. Use city/state only for location, not a full street address. Technical Skills Architecture

Organize skills into explicit categories rather than a flat list. Projects Section

Include a dedicated Projects section when you are entry-level (where projects may be more impressive than your limited job history) or when a specific project is more relevant than your current role. Each entry should include: project name, scope (budget or scale), your role, and one impact metric. PE License and Professional Certifications

The Professional Engineer license is the engineering equivalent of a teaching license: ATS systems scan for it specifically, and many senior roles require it. Format each license on a separate line:

Below 3.0, omit it and let your project and experience record carry the page. For recent graduates, include thesis title if it directly relates to the target role. For engineers with 5 or more years of experience, education moves below technical skills and experience.

Engineering Salary Context by Discipline

Knowing where your discipline sits in the salary distribution helps you position your resume toward higher-value roles. Engineers earning below the median in their discipline often have resumes that do not signal specialization clearly. The right keywords, PE license, and quantified project values signal market-rate or above-market candidacy.

Common Engineering Resume Mistakes

Mistake 1: Burying the skills section at the bottom

The problem: Many engineers follow an older convention of listing skills after experience. ATS scans the top of the document first, and a hidden skills section can cause the application to score poorly.

The fix: Move Technical Skills to directly below the Professional Summary for mid-career and senior engineers. It is the primary ATS signal.

Mistake 2: Listing tools without context

The problem: "SolidWorks, ANSYS, MATLAB, AutoCAD, Python, Creo, Teamcenter, CATIA" is a list. It tells the reviewer nothing about how you used those tools or what you built with them.

The fix: Mention your most critical tools in context in your experience bullets as well as your skills section.

Mistake 3: Two-column template that fails ATS
