The median mechanical engineer salary is $102,320 per year, and employment is projected to grow 9% through 2034, faster than the average for all occupations, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. With SolidWorks proficiency appearing in 68% of mechanical engineering job postings, the CAD and simulation software you list, and how specifically you list it, has more impact on your ATS match score than almost any other resume decision. This guide covers three resume examples by discipline with a framework for quantifying engineering achievements.

What Makes a Mechanical Engineer Resume Stand Out

Engineering resumes have three structural decisions that ATS systems and hiring managers weigh differently from other fields.

PE License Placement

If you hold a Professional Engineer (PE) license, list it immediately after your name. ASME salary data shows PE holders earn 12 to 15% more than non-licensed engineers in equivalent roles. If you have passed the FE (Fundamentals of Engineering) exam but not yet the PE, note "EIT" or "PE Candidate" to signal progress.

CAD Software by Name

SolidWorks, AutoCAD, CATIA, Creo (Pro/E), NX Unigraphics, and Inventor are discrete ATS keywords. "Proficient in CAD software" passes no ATS filter. List the tools you have genuinely used with a rough proficiency indicator where it adds context: "SolidWorks (7 years, CSWA certified)" outperforms "SolidWorks" alone.

Design vs. Manufacturing Track

Your headline should declare your track. "Mechanical Design Engineer" and "Manufacturing Engineer" are different ATS targets. A design-focused resume leads with CAD, FEA, and innovation metrics. A manufacturing resume leads with process optimization, GD&T, lean/Six Sigma, and cost reduction figures. Applying with a blended-but-generic resume to either role is an ATS score penalty.
