Rule of thumb: include specific tool versions only when the job description does. Listing "Revit 2024" against a posting that says "Revit 2022" adds no score but costs one row of white space.
PE License and Credentials Roadmap
Where each credential sits on your resume depends on career stage and whether the job posting lists the license as required, preferred, or a plus.
Stage 1: Student / New Grad
Take the FE exam in senior year or within 6 months of graduation. On your resume, list "FE Passed (State), Month Year" immediately below your name. If your state issues an EIT certificate, list "EIT" as a post-nominal. An ABET-accredited degree is the gating requirement for FE eligibility in most states.
Stage 2: Early Career (EIT to PE)
Keep "EIT" as a post-nominal. Track supervised experience carefully: most states require four years of progressive engineering work under a licensed PE before sitting for the PE Civil exam. Log reference letter requests 6 months before applying. The PE Civil exam is $250 and offered year-round at Pearson VUE.
Stage 3: Licensed PE
Move "PE" to the header beside your name and include state plus license number in one line of contact info. Add NCEES Record if you practice in multiple states; it streamlines comity applications. A second state license is a meaningful differentiator on national-practice firms.

Government vs. Private Firm Tailoring
A federal USAJobs civil engineer resume is structurally different from a private consulting firm resume. The USAJobs two-page rule (effective September 27, 2025) did not change the content requirements, only reduced the length cap. Hours per week, employer addresses, and month/year dates are still mandatory, and KSAs still need direct evidence in the work history, not a separate narrative.
